- In December 2008, Brenda was serving as a volunteer business adviser to an ecotourism project in rural Mali when a water tower built to irrigate a village garden collapsed, killing one colleague and leaving Brenda with a permanent disability—left AKA. Following four months of hospitalization and relocation to the east coast, she now is reconstructing her life: exploring new outdoor sports and rediscovering more sedentary interests.
